Teck Resources (TSX: TECK.A and TECK.B; NYSE: TECK) announced last week that it had achieved the Zinc Mark for its Trail, B.C., mining operations.
Teck’s Trail facilities in southern B.C. are among the largest fully integrated zinc and lead smelting and refining complexes in the world. The Trail operation is the first stand-alone zinc processing site to win the Zinc Mark.
The award is based on 32 production criteria including environmental, community health and safety, business integrity and respect for Indigenous rights.
The award is part of the Copper Mark framework. Copper Mark assesses copper, nickel, zinc or molybdenum producing sites on criteria around responsible mine production. According to its website, “Copper Mark is the first and only assurance framework for copper, created to demonstrate responsible production practices and the industry’s contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals .”
In a statement Thursday Teck CEO Jonathan Price said that given zinc’s crucial role in global decarbonization efforts, “it is important to produce zinc sustainably and responsibly.
